Program notes

The next generation of great classical musicians prove their mettle as part of the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra in a romantic Russian concert under the direction of James Gaffigan, live from the Verbier Festival! The maestro leads the young ensemble in a vibrant tribute to Russian music, featuring two beloved musical settings of the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Tchaikovsky's eponymous working of the Shakespearean tragedy, styled an Overture-Fantasy, opens the evening, before virtuoso pianist Behzod Abduraimov makes his entrance onstage for a stellar rendition of Rachmaninov’s exquisite Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini. The concert ends in high-kicking style with excerpts from Romeo and Juliet, the legendary ballet by Prokofiev.
