Vadym Kholodenko
Biographie
Vadym Kholodenko is fast building a reputation as one of the most musically dynamic and technically gifted performers of the new generation of pianists, praised by the Philadelphia Enquirer in his performance of Tchaikovsky with the Philadelphia Orchestra for "his absorbing melodic shading [and] glittering passage work". Winner of the 2013 Gold Medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Kholodenko has begun to forge an international career throughout Europe, Asia and North America to great critical acclaim. Previous awards include First Prize at the 2011 Schubert Piano Competition in Dortmund, First Prize at the 2010 Sendai Piano Competition in Japan and the Grand Prix at the Maria Callas Competition in Athens.
From the 14/15 season Kholodenko becomes the first ever "Artist in Partnership" with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. This three-year collaboration begins with performances of the complete Prokofiev piano concertos which will also be recorded for Harmonia Mundi, in addition to chamber music projects and international touring. Other US highlights this season include performances with the Indianapolis Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, and San Diego Symphony Orchestras, and solo recitals in Boston, Louisville, Miami and Seattle. In August he returns to the Aspen Music Festival for a performance of Messiaen's complete Vingt regards sur l'enfant Jésus.
European engagements in 2014/15 include performances with the Malmö Symphony (Mozart) and Madrid RTVE Symphony Orchestras (Beethoven) as well as recitals in the UK, Radio France in Paris and at the Schwetzingen Festspiele in Germany. Further afield he will undertake a recital tour of Japan and Singapore, tour South America with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra (Grieg), perform with the Qatar Philharmonic (Prokofiev) and give a recital at the Al Bustan Festival.
Highlights from last season include successful debuts with the Philadelphia Orchestra and at the Aspen Music Festival and recitals in Houston, Indianapolis, Portland, Carmel and Santa Fe. In Europe he performed with the Orquestra Sinfónica Do Porto Casa Da Música and held a residency at the Mariinsky Concert Hall where he was named Artist of the Month by Valery Gergiev.
Kholodenko has collaborated with distinguished conductors including Leonard Slatkin, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Yuri Bashmet, Carl St Clair, Vladimir Spivakov, Kazuki Yamada, Mark Gorenstein and Alexander Sladkovskiy. A committed chamber musician he has collaborated with Vadim Repin, Alena Baeva and formed a piano duet iDuo with Andrey Gugin. In addition to the Cliburn Competition's Gold Medal, he also won the competition's prize for Best Chamber Music Performance with César Franck's piano quintet.
His first recording for Harmonia Mundi was released in November 2013 and featured Stravinsky Trois Mouvements de Petrouchka and Liszt Transcendental Etudes. His recording of Grieg Piano Concerto and Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No 2 recorded with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra under the baton of Miguel Harth-Bedoya will be released in summer 2015, and the Prokofiev Concerto cycle will follow in 2016 and 2017.
Vadym Kholodenko was born in 1986 in Kiev, Ukraine and began his studies at Kiev's Mykola Lysenko Special Music School under Prof. Natalia Grydneva and Prof. Borys Fedorov. At the age of 13 gave his first concerts in the USA, China, Hungary and Croatia and in 2004 he was awarded the Russian Youth National Prize "Triumph". In 2005 moved to Moscow to study at the Moscow State Conservatoire under the tutelage of the Honoured Artist of the USSR, Professor Vera Gornostaeva.
