"I shall not alter a single note [...] I shall publish the work exactly as it is!" This is Tchaikovsky’s adamant reaction to the cold, not to say rude, judgment made by Nikolaï Rubinstein of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1. The first dedicatee of the work and, at the time, director of the Conservatory of Moscow, had affirmed, “My friend, how can I speak of detail when the whole thing is antipathetic?” And yet, the Piano Concerto in B-flat minor, Op. 23 is considered one of the best piano partitions by the Russian composer, a greatly famous and beloved work, and a piece of world cultural patrimony! Rubinstein, for his part, faced up to the facts. In fact, he became one of the best interpreters of the work, making Piano Concerto No. 1 his centerpiece!
