From the beginning of this double profile on the singer and double bassist Mimi Jones and the pianist Luis Perdomo, it is clear that both artists are aligned on the musical philosophy that drives them: "I feel like we as musicians are just a vessel ... I would like to utilise that to uplift people," Mimi says, while Luis concurs: "In my case I always want people to feel happy ... it is what I have to do as an artist." This is the only episode of Gloria Rebecchi's wonderful Sound of New York documentary series that features two artists. Why? Well, Mimi and Luis are a musician couple who, as journalist Ashley Kahn puts it, make us "see the kind of connections that are possible, loving connections that are possible, in the world of music."
From the off, improv sessions are intercut with the two musicians praising each other. For Luis, Mimi possesses a rare sense for rhythm and a big sound at such a young age. For Mimi, Luis is one of the great pianists in New York. Influenced by the greats, like Bud Powell, Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner, Luis exudes great ideas, energy and spirit as a musician, one whose Venezuelan roots are just detectable in expert playing formed by New York clubs and the Manhattan School of Music. Mimi came through the same school, having switched from the cello to the double bass at high school and "falling in love."
This is a touching film about two fascinating characters who practice, play and love together.
