Sobre el programa...

"I describe myself as an artist and a musician, not married to a particular genre or style ... a free agent moving within the world of art and music." This profile of Matthew Stevens, the Toronto-born guitar trailblazer, is part of Gloria Rebecchi's fantastic series charting the contemporary jazz scene in New York through its most promising practitioners. Right from the beginning, it is clear that Matthew's attachment to his music is inseparable from his outlook on life: "As a person and a music-maker, I want to embrace change, uncertainty, chaos, which are just true and inevitable. It's liberating ... I want to learn and be open in music and in life."

One of the most talented musicians to graduate from his class in the famous Berklee College of Music, he moved to Brooklyn and soon carved out a space in contemporary music alongside the likes of Terri Lyne Carrington, Esperanza Spalding and Christian Scott. From the beginning he was a darling of the critics, with journalist Ashley Kahn describing him as a descendant of the Miles Davis school of electronic jazz, a musician "jumping up from the mountain those guys created ... to hear the tones, timbres and textures this guy is working with is to really hear where the future of jazz guitar is going." A fascinating portrait of a musician whose career will surely define future attitudes towards music.
