Sobre el programa...

#mediciverbier10 – Lorenzo Viotti conducts the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra for a concert focused on Spain, with Ravel’s Pavane for a Dead Princess and three major pieces from the Iberian repertoire: Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, Turina's La Oración del torero and El Amor brujo, the incandescent flamenco ballet by de Falla.

Dedicated to the Princess Edmond de Polignac and composed in 1899, Ravel’s Pavane for a Dead Princess is well-known in its orchestral version although it was created for solo piano. Rodrigo composed his Concierto de Aranjuez at the end of a stay in Paris, highlighting his affection for Spanish history. La Oración del torero by Turina follows, a relative rarity composed for lute quartet.

To end the concert, the orchestra performs El Amor brujo, an orchestral suite created at the request of Pastora Imperio, the legendary flamenco dancer. Young Swiss conductor Lorenzo Viotti, a protégé of Mariss Jansons and Bernard Haitink, directs the performance.
