The Mariinsky Orchestra, conducted by Valery Gergiev, joins forces with superstar pianist Denis Matsuev, who performs Prokofiev's Second Piano Concerto. An extremely virtuoso piece, the Piano Concerto No. 2 was composed between 1912 and 1913 by a 20 year-old Prokofiev. The score was lost during the Revolution of 1917, and then re-written by the composer in 1923.

Denis Matsuev, who won the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1998, is a frequent guest of Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra. They have given many concerts together and recorded several albums on the Mariinsky label. Among their latest releases: Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerti No. 1 and No. 2 (2013), Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 (2014), and Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 1 and Shchedrin's Piano Concerto No. 2 (2015).

The program also includes pieces by Carl-Maria von Weber: the overture to Der Freischütz (one of the German repertoire's best known operas) and the Rondo Op. 64, "Invitation to the Dance".
