It is often said that the idea of the composition of this work was born while Mahler was asssiting the funerals of Hans von Bülow, one of the leading figures in the musical land of the 19th century. In any case, when Mahler conducts it for the first time on March the 4th of 1895, the Symphony No. 2, written for two soloists, choir and orchestra, is a completely innovative score. As is often the case for visionary masterpieces, this one is not critically acclaimed at all. However, the Second Symphony is already a manifesto of the Mahlerian style, which was meant to perpetuate.
The Orféon Donostiarra Choir from San Sebastián is renowned in Europe as one of the best choirs of our days – you recently had the opportunity to hear it sing the Fauré Requiem with Josep Pons on medici.tv. Moreover, the vocal ensemble has participated in many projects initiated by the Orchestre du Capitole. A rising star coming from the Mariinsky Theatre where she performs as a soloist, Anastasia Kalagina has won the greatest prizes a singer could dream of. Tugan Sokhiev and the orchestra have collaborated with the soprano one year ago, when Anastasia made her debuts in Toulouse as Lisa (Les Fiançailles au couvent, Prokofiev), a role for which she was greatly acclaimed. She now sings the hymn of resurrection in the final movement of the symphony.
