Lucas Debargue plays Chopin, Beethoven, and Bach

Since finishing fourth at the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition and walking away with the prestigious Moscow Music Critics Association Prize, Lucas Debargue’s talents have shot him to the top of the classical music scene. The young French pianist begins this solo recital at Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Concert Hall with a series of solo works by Chopin: the beloved Polonaise in A-flat Major, two Scherzi, a Barcarolle, and a Nocturne. He then performs Beethoven’s Sonata No. 32 in C Minor, Op. 2. The last piano sonata the composer would ever write, it is one of his most profound and influential works of the genre, with an impact that can be felt in orchestral compositions by the likes of Wagner, Prokofiev, and Mahler. The recital closes with the Toccata in C Minor, an early keyboard work by Bach that is structured in one uninterrupted musical stream, flowing from an opening fantasia into an adagio before closing with a fugue.
