Sobre el programa...

Medici.tv broadcasts live from the Maison symphonique de Montréal the inaugural concert of the Grand Orgue Pierre-Béique with the organist Olivier Latry and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal under Kent Nagano's baton. The programme includes Camille Saint-Saëns' Symphony No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 78, "with organ", Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, Liszt's Fantasy and Fugue on the Theme B-A-C-H, and two world premieres by Kaija Saariaho and Samy Moussa.

Symphonies composed for orchestra and organ are few, they are moreover seldom performed. Essentially written by French composers of the second half of the 19th century, these symphonies arose in the musical repertoire thanks to an impulse given by the organ maker Aristide Cavaillé-Coll and four emblematic composers: César Franck, Charles-Marie Widor, Alexandre Guilmant and Louis Vierne. Camille Saint-Saëns was "the best organist in the world" according to Franz Liszt, and also contributed to this specific genre with his Symphony No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 78, "with organ", assuredly one of his most popular scores. Divided in two movements on the score, the Symphony No. 3 follows nonetheless a four-part structure lying within the traditional scheme of classical symphonies.

To inaugurate the new organ of the Maison symphonique de Montréal, Olivier Latry, organist emeritus and tenured organist at the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, performs Camille Saint-Saëns' masterwork in the company of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal conducted by Kent Nagano. Olivier Latry will also perform Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, an iconic work in the repertoire for organ, and the Fantasy and Fugue on the Theme B-A-C-H composed in 1855 by Franz Liszt. The programme also includes two world premieres by Kaija Saariaho (Maan Varjot) and Samy Moussa, for organ and orchestra.
