Glass Marcano

Glass Marcano was born in Venezuela (San Felipe) and began her musical studies very young as part of the extraordinary “El Sistema” project, the National System of Youth and Children's Orchestras and Choirs founded by José Antonio Abreu. At the age of 8, she took violin lessons at the Conservatorio de Música Blanca Estrella de Mescoli, then became a member of the Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de San Felipe in Venezuela. As her musical training continued, she became a member of many national orchestras until October 2012. A natural, she began studying conducting with Teresa Hernandez then at the Universidad Experimental de las Artes with Alfredo Rugeles and graduated in 2017. Marcano continued then to attend conducting master classes with teachers such as François-Xavier Roth, Johannes Schläfli, Giancarlos Guerrero, Claire Gibault, Maxime Pascal and Sabrié Bekirova.

In 2018 she was appointed Principal Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil Simón Bolívar, composed of members of El Sistema program. In the following years she conducted some of the most important youth orchestras of Latin America—and then, in 2020, her talent was noticed on a grander scale and she was selected among the 12 finalists to participate in the first edition of La Maestra Competition in Paris, winning the Orchestra Award.

Since then, Marcano has conducted several orchestras like Orchestre de l’Opéra de Tours, Orquestra Gulbenkian, Filarmónica de Bogotà, Orquesta Sinfónica de Cartagena, Paris Mozart Orchestra, Orchestre Le Balcon, and Orchestre national de Lyon and filled the role of assistant conductor for François-Xavier Roth, Kazushi Ono.

In summer 2022, Glass completed a tour with the Chineke! Junior Orchestra, in which the profound values she believes in combined with the passion and enthusiasm of the musicians of this formidable ensemble were expressed through outstanding performances at the Lucerne Festival's opening concert, as well as the Berlin Konzerthaus, Amsterdam Concertgebouw and London Clore Ballroom.

Upcoming engagements include her debut with Brussels Philharmonic at the Flagey Musiq3 Festival in Brussels (Belgium), with Orchestra Filarmonica «Arturo Toscanini» in Lerici (Italy), the opening concert of the 2023 Brucknerfest in Linz (Austria), with the Ensemble Obiora in Montreal (Canada), with the Wiener Concert-Verein in the Brahms Saal at the Vienna Musikverein (Austria), with the Filharmonia Zielonogorska (Poland), with the Oakland Symphony (USA), with the Orchestre Metropolitain de Montreal (Canada), with the Pforzheim Symphony (Germany) and with the Orchestre de Chambre de Genéve (Swiss).

She graduated in law in 2022 at the Universidad Central of Venezuela, is currently studying orchestral conducting at the Paris Conservatory under the guidance of Pierre Michel Durand and she is about to finish her Bachelor's in orchestral conducting at the Universidad Nacional Experimental de las Artes de Venezuela.
