Edgardo Rocha

Edgardo Rocha was born in Rivera, Uruguay. He graduated in piano and studied orchestral and choral conducting at the music school of the Universidad de la República. He studied notably with Beatrice Pazos and Raquel Pierotti.
In 2008, he went to Italy to pursue his studies with the tenor Salvatore Fisichella and he also participated in Rockwell Blake and Alessandro Corbelli’s master classes.
Among the prizes and awards he won during his career there are the 51st competition for young Uruguayan musicians, the "Maria Callas" international singing competition in São Paulo Brazil, the "Giulio Neri" competition in Siena and the "Primo palcoscenico" in Cesena Italy, where he also made his debut as Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia.
His repertoire includes Mozart’s Requiem and Vesperae solennes de confessore, the Christmas Oratorio, Easter Oratorio, The Magnificat in D Major and the cantatas BWV 10, 147 and 182 by Bach with the Montevideo Philharmonic and the SODRE (National) Symphony of Uruguay; Ways of zion do mourn by Handel with the Orchestra barocca of Pisa; Charpentier’s Te deum at the Teatro comunale in Florence with the Camerata del maggio musicale fiorentino; the Petite messe solennelle by Rossini with the Ensemble Rami musicali of Florence.
In 2010, he made his debut as Gianni in Gianni di Parigi by Donizetti at Martina Franca, Italy. This role, initially written for the great Italian tenor Giovanni Battista Rubini, was considered being extremely difficult to interpret and launched Rocha’s international career. Since then, he performed Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola at Teatro Lirico in Cagliari and at Circuito Lirico Lombardo, Don Pasquale at Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Così fan tutte at theater San Carlo in Naples, L’Italiana in Algeri at Teatro dell’opera giocosa in Savona, La Scala di seta at Opernhaus Zürich, Gianni di Parigi at Wexford Festival Opera, and Iago in Rossini's Otello at the Opernhaus Zürich (webcast live on medici.tv).
During his career, he has sung under the baton of conductors like Giacomo Sagripanti, Hubert Soudant, Riccardo Frizza, Alan Curtis, Jonathan Webb, Aldo Sisillo and Zsolt Hamar, and worked with movie directors Rosetta Cucchi, Jonathan Miller, Francesco Esposito and Damiano Michieletto.
