Grand Piano Competition (About the competition)

About the competition

The original idea for the competition came from pianist Denis Matsuev, president of the organizing committee and artistic director of the the Grand Piano Competition.

"Our format is absolutely unique. First, the jury can hear every contestant both with a solo programme and with the orchestra. Second, no contestant is eliminated between two rounds, therefore we avoid disappointments and shocks that are common for every competition. At the closing gala one of the contestants will be awarded the Grand Prix, which is a concert grand piano. However, the other participants will bear no grudge, awarded by performance opportunities with leading orchestras. Providing them new creative avenues is indeed our primary mission. Our Grand Piano laureates have made great headway over the last years, debuting at major venues, performing with renowned orchestras and conductors, and releasing recordings."

On Matzuev’s prompting, the Russian Ministry of Culture and the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory founded the competition with the goals of discovering today’s best young pianists under the age of 17, promoting classical music for piano as an important element in the cultural education of younger generations, and supporting talented young pianists at the beginning of their careers.

The competition will unfold on the stages of the Central Music School’s Concert Hall, Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, and Tchaikovsky Concert Hall of the Moscow Philharmonic. The contestants will appear with the State Symphony Orchestra "Evgeny Svetlanov" under the direction of Alexander Sladkovsky and Yury Tkachenko. The Grand Prize, which includes a Yamaha Grand piano, will be awarded based on the personal decision of the competition’s artistic direction at the end of the gala concert. Other awards include five prizes of $5,000 each to the five top-scoring participants, and ten prizes of $1,000 each to the next ten participants. An additional $ 1,000 will be awarded to each laureate’s tutor.
