Program notes
New for 2016, the Chorégies d'Orange presents Verdi's magnificent opera La Traviata. Staged by Louis Désiré and directed by Daniele Rustioni, the performance stars Ermonela Jaho, Francesco Meli and Plácido Domingo.
La Traviata is a three-act opera composed by Verdi to a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave and based on Alexandre Dumas' novel La Dame aux Camélias. First staged in Venice in 1853, it met with little success at first. Verdi blamed the artists and the public, however, it is now one of his most popular and notorious operas.
The young Italian conductor Daniele Rustioni, making his debut at the Chorégies d’Orange, conducts the Orchestre National Bordeaux-Aquitaine. Appearing in the central role of Violetta, a Parisian courtesan, is Albanian soprano Ermonela Jaho. She is unquestionably one of today’s most exciting singers and has recently collected the Reader’s Choice Award at the International Opera Awards 2016. She is joined by Francesco Meli and Plácido Domingo in the roles of Alfredo and Giorgio.
