Today the best-known work by Armenian composer Alexander Arutiunian, the thrillingly flashy and deeply soulful Trumpet Concerto in A-flat (1949-50) is the composer's expression of national identity, incorporating the melodies and rhythms of Armenian folk music. An immediate hit with audiences, critics, and trumpeters alike, it is an electrifying and virtuosic showpiece that takes full advantage of the instrument's capabilities. Professor Sergiu Carstea is an accomplished trumpeter from Moldova who has performed and taught worldwide. A graduate of the illustrious Paris Conservatory, he now serves as a professor at the National University of Music in Bucharest and the Faculty of Music of the University of West Timisoara in Romania. Carstea is the author of numerous publications relating to trumpet technique and interpretation and is often invited to conduct master classes at universities across Europe, Asia, and North Africa. He is also founder and president of the Romanian Brass Society as well as founder and artistic director of the International Brass Competition in Timisoara.
