Program notes

Vibrant, modernized Afrobeat that is forever connected to the ancestors. Vaudou Game are perhaps the most exciting live group you’ll ever see. With a blend of soul, afro-funk, jazz and, of course, voodoo rhythms, their music makes a fast, all-encompassing and lasting impression on audiences. Peter Solo, the singer and composer for the group was born in Aného-Glidji (Togo), a center for Voodoo culture and dreamt of combining his heritage with the rapid spread of soul, funk and R&B during his childhood in the 70s and 80s.

Music ran through his veins and at the age of thirteen he made his first guitar out of oil, wood and vehicle brake cables, on which his brother taught him his first scales. Solicited early on for his talents, he was touring with the likes of Miriam Makeba in his early twenties and his debut album, Sodabi Agbana, made him a local star. Echoing the work of the legendary Beninise group Polu-Rhythmo de Cotonou, Vaudou Game gives an inclusive spirit to ritual music and pays homage to the ancestors alongside international audiences. This concert includes performances of some of the group’s biggest hits: “La Vie est Bon,” “Tata Fatiguee” and, of course, “Pas Contente.”
