Program notes

Stefano Di Battista floods the 2018 session of Jazz aux frontières with its frank neo hard bop style virtuosity. This saxophonist of Italian origin has an atypical background. He was initially trained at 13 years old in a neighborhood group mainly composed of children. Then, he quickly improved his skills at his local music school. Here, alongside famous pianist Eric Legnini, he gifts us with a selection of his best albums’ compositions. Developed with the late Michel Petrucciani, these original works are a tasty mix between Italian standards and tributes to the famous saxophonist Charlie Parker.

Stefano Di Battista’s playing style is undoubtedly characterized by technical improvisations, as well as the complex and eccentric harmonies deployed in his music. He started his career at 23 years old, first appearing on stage during the Calvi Jazz Festival in Corsica. This unique experience allowed him to play at the Sunset a few months after. It is well afterwards, in 2004, that he recorded his famous Parker's mood album, a vibrant tribute to this  genius virtuoso, who died  in deplorable conditions at the young age of 34.
