Jazz à Vienne 2018
As one of the most exciting young trumpet players of a generation, Ambrose Akinmusire is building a repertoire of intricate, boundary-pushing music that represents his own journey. This 2018 concert came just after the release of his modern classic, Origami Harvest, a sprawling and challenging record that was marked, in turns, by agitation and protest and by beauty and serenity. Here, he focuses on tracks from his 2017 album, A Rift In Decorum, which was universally lauded, announcing the arrival of a possible new genius of jazz.
After all, not many thirty-something musicians sign with Blue Note. It puts Akinmusire in the company of the jazz pantheon, and he seems well-suited to the role. Here, on the Jazz à Vienne stage, he weaves narratives through his horn with ease and conviction, never totally releasing tension and always keeping the audience hooked. A majestic trumpeter whose star will inevitably rise in the coming years and decades.
