Program notes

Swiss writer Charles Ferdinand Ramuz wrote Souvenirs sur Igor Stravinsky some years after his collaboration with the composer on Les noces in Switzerland in 1916 and from this arose a profound friendship.

Nowadays, on the shores of Lake Geneva, an actress and a conductor can be seen rehearsing Les noces, with Russian folk texts recounting a peasant wedding. As a crossover between memories of a unique collaboration and the work of two artists who are now faced with the challenge of creating a masterpiece of modern music, Les noces tells the story of the strength of a musical friendship.

The symbiosis between image and music has always been at the heart of Philippe Béziat’s filmmaking. After directing various documentaries on opera music, such as Pelléas et Mélisande, Le chant des aveugles in 2008 and Becoming Traviata in 2012, the French director turned his hand to drama. Whatever the production, they always have one thing in common – they speak to the audience of classical music and opera!
