Program notes

The Man of Glass draws the viewer into the life of Tchaikovsky and to the sound of one of his most popular pieces, the String Serenade.

The film features on-screen performances by the I Musici de Montréal Chamber Orchestra, the actors, and the dancers, blended with original, skilfully crafted documentary vignettes inspired by the life of the composer.

Born in 19th-century Russia, Tchaikovsky led a life crowned with success. In the wings of an Italian theater and against a romantic countryside backdrop, dancers and actors poignantly enact various facets of the composer's intimate life: his unavowed homosexuality, his relationship with his wife Antonina, his strange ties to Baroness von Meck, his patron, and the persecution complex that led ultimately to his death.
