Program notes

With the help of the young French star Philippe Jaroussky, filmmaker Jeremy Rozen offers an in-depth look at what takes to become and what it means to be a countertenor.

It is difficult to be indifferent to the voice of a countertenor. Whether it shocks or soothes, their voices always jostle our sensibilities. Although their high-pitched singing may seem mysterious, it is produced using a straightforward vocal technique. The singer develops his voice using this technique, creating a universe of new possibilities in the process. Following the countertenor Philippe Jaroussky in his vocal exercises, concerts, moments of doubt, long workdays, failures and successes, this documentary portrays a passionate and ambitious person and explores what it means to be an Artist.
