Program notes

Will opera singing always be meant for the elite only? Catherine Manandaza, soprano, and her partner and baritone Jean-Christophe Grégoire, offer an original answer to this question.

In this fresh documentary, we follow their itinerary, from the streets of Paris to the most beautiful opera houses of the French capital. Determined to share their passion with as many persons as possible, they invented a new form of performing. From the garden of the Royal Palace to the vaults of the bridges by the Seine, the young couple goes meet people with outdoor concerts, carrying a philosophy: to give life to the opera by allowing a wide audience to discover it in a different way.

This "commandopera", as they call it, hides a thought-out concept and a relentless work behind an apparent spontaneity. The movie also shows them in small concert halls and during working sessions with a lyric art teacher. Those enthusiasts show all the perseverance they need to someday hope to perform the great roles of the repertoire. But will their initiative and motivation be enough to obtain a role in the prestigious opera houses of France?
