Theater Director Katie Mitchell made music history when she staged Bach’s sacred cantatas. The musical direction of the production was headed up by the young conductor and historical performance practice specialist Raphaël Pichon.
This documentary explores Trauernacht, one of the British director's most original works to date. This was Mitchell’s third production under the auspices of the Festival of Aix-en-Provence, where her 2012 Written on skin was particularly acclaimed.
With Trauernacht, Mitchell set herself an unprecedented challenge. Part of this challenge lay the musical work’s explicitly sacred nature: as she described in Libération, "A notable aspect of Bach's music is that a lots of non-believers find reassurance listening to it. In a way, my Trauernacht production asks why this music is still so important today."
