As a filmmaker, Andy Sommer tells how video recordings of operas are done: he explains his choices for Verdi's Aida in Zurich (a production by Nicolas Joël).
Discussing those choices before the recording with the stage director is, of course, a very important thing. "It is his vision of Aida that inspires me first," humbly says Andy Sommer about Nicolas Joël's staging for Aida in Zurich. But Andy Sommer also brings with him a huge cinematographic culture which helps him to avoid a simple video recording with no style at all. That's why the collaboration for this project is so perfect: for his staging of Aida, Nicolas Joël himself got his inspiration from movies of the 1960s-1970s, like Death on the Nile with Peter Ustinov.
