Program notes

Join the legendary maestro Zubin Mehta as he says his goodbyes to his cherished musical partner the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra: a magnificent yet bittersweet musical celebration before his retirement as their music director at the end of October 2019.

For this special concert program, Mehta invites his close friend, the equally-legendary Pinchas Zukerman, on stage for Elgar’s Violin Concerto—described by the composer himself as “terribly emotional. Maybe even too emotional, but I love it”— before turning to Beethoven’s spellbinding Seventh Symphony. Met with immediate critical success, the symphony’s rhythmic dynamism and irresistible energy combine with melodic genius to create one of the most unforgettable masterpieces of the classical music canon.
