Program notes

Catch Yuja Wang in a stunning solo recital at the Berliner Philharmonie, recorded live in June 2018! Performing 20th century masterpieces for her instrument by Rachmaninov, Scriabin, and Prokofiev, Wang brings all her sensitivity and virtuosity to bear in this remarkable program.

Préludes and Études by Rachmaninov—one of the 20th century’s most iconic and contrasting composers for the piano—form the backbone of the recital program. These shorter works are juxtaposed with Scriabin’s ecstatic Sonata No. 10—his final contribution to the genre—and Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 8, composed during the Second World War and celebrated by Sviatoslav Richter as “the richest of all of Prokofiev’s sonatas. It contains a whole human life with all its contradictions.”

Wang’s compelling performance was filmed in its entirety and released as an album in November 2018 by Deutsche Grammophon. Click here to listen to an audio version of the concert's encores!
