Program notes

The 2021 edition of the prestigious Salzburg Festival opens in fireworks with a concert by one of the most illustrious ensembles on the planet, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

Nestled in the heart of Mozart’s hometown, the walls of Salzburg’s Great Festival Hall first resonate with the orchestra's pristine sound in the company of incomparable mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča, who performs Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder, five gorgeous songs based on texts by German poet Friedrich Rückert. The marvelous musicians of the Wiener Philharmoniker, under the baton of the peerless Christian Thielemann, conclude the evening in style with the superb Symphony No. 7 by another of Austria’s favorite sons, legendary symphonist Anton Bruckner.
