Program notes

The 2022 Tsinandali Festival continues with another chamber music dream team: Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang, Austro-Iranien cellist Kian Soltani, and French pianist Julien Quentin! These three artists from very different backgrounds come together on stage to interpret two of the repertoire's most remarkable trios by Ravel and Mendelssohn…

First up is Ravel's Trio in A Minor, composed during the First World War in response to the composer's anguish. Though the work maintains a typical structure, Ravel peppers in personal ideas—like the addition of Basque rhythms in the first and last movements, the allusion to a Malay poetic form (pantoum), the use of piercing tones, and the expression of great violence, which all help establish this trio as an undeniable masterpiece. The three superb musicians then move on to Mendelssohn's Trio No. 2 in C minor, composed in 1845. Dedicated to Mendelssohn's good friend, the violinist and composer Louis Spohr, this trio also inspired the scherzo of Brahms's Piano Sonata No. 3!
