Program notes

#mediciverbier10 – After Brahms in the opening evening of the Verbier Festival 2016, Korean violinist Kyung Wha Chung accompanied by Kevin Kenner, offers outstanding performances of three major Sonatas by Fauré, Prokofiev and Franck.

Fauré's Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 1 in A Major is one of the composer's most well-known works and is followed by Prokofiev's Sonata. Started in 1938 after he heard a Handel’s Sonata for Violin and Piano, Prokofiev did not complete the work until eight years later.

Closing the concert is Franck's Sonata for Violin and Piano in A major. Probably the most popular and recorded violin sonata, it is an indisputable masterpiece of French 19th century chamber music. It was created during the summer of 1886 and dedicated to the virtuoso violinist Eugène Ysaÿe.

Kyung Wha Chung appears by kind permission of Erato/Warner Classics.
