Program notes

In this 2016 Verbier Festival concert, Christian Tetzlaff presents a recital of masterpieces for solo violin: Ysaÿe's Sonata No. 1, Bach's Sonata No. 2 for Solo Violin, and Bartók's Sonata for Solo Violin.

The recital opens with Ysaÿe's challenging Sonata No. 1 in G Minor, written for the violinist Joseph Szigeti, who was lauded by the composer for having "a rare quality nowadays, being both a virtuoso and a musician." Ysaÿe's six sonatas for solo violin are inspired and influenced by the solo violin works of Bach, whose Sonata No. 3 in C Major comes second on the program. Tetzlaff then performs Bartók's extremely difficult Sonata for Solo Violin, which was commissioned by the great virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin and constitutes one of the composer's last great works.
