Program notes

Valery Gergiev and violinist Lorenz Nasturica-Herschcowici lead the Chamber Orchestra of the Münchner Philharmoniker and the Stradivarius Ensemble of the Mariinsky Theatre in a performance of works by Mozart (Sinfonia concertante in E-flat Major for Violin and Viola, and Violin Concerto No. 2 in D Major) and Elgar (Introduction and Allegro for Strings, and Serenade for Strings in E Minor, op. 20) featuring soloists Yuri Afonkin (viola) and Sergey Dogadin (violin).

For this year’s MPHIL 360°, Valery Gergiev and the Münchner Philharmoniker join forces with the world-renowned Mariinsky Orchestra of St. Petersburg to put together a musical celebration of impressive proportions! The three day festival presents all of Sergei Prokofiev’s symphonies and piano sonatas, all of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s violin concerti and Domenico Scarlatti’s piano sonatas, as well as selected works by Richard Wagner and Edward Elgar. Stars and star-ensembles of today’s classical music world will also be taking part in the performances, in particular honorees of the International Tchaikovsky competition.
