Program notes
Live from the Salle des Combins, the 2021 Verbier Festival continues with three of the biggest stars of the opera stage, plus pianist and expert vocal accompanist James Baillieu! Superb soprano Maria Bayankina, celebrated tenor Marcelo Álvarez, and baritone Ambrogio Maestri—one of today's most acclaimed Verdi interpreters—perform a selection of beloved opera arias, including some of the works that helped launch them to stardom. Maestri sings excerpts from Donizetti's L'Elisir d'amore and from La Traviata—alongside the brilliant Bayankina, recently much-lauded Violetta at the Mariinsky Theatre—while Álvarez interprets selections from Puccini's Tosca as well as Le Cid by Massenet, a composer whose work he knows profoundly, having played the Chevalier des Grieux in Manon and the titular role in Werther.
