Program notes
Don’t miss the Tsinandali Festival 2023! Every year since 2019, the greatest performers, conductors, composers, and artists from all over the world have joined forces for 10 days in the magnificent village of Tsinandali, in eastern Georgia, to promote music in this region at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. The 2023 edition features a special celebration of the great Sergei Rachmaninov, marking 150 years since the legendary Romantic composer's birth.
One of today's most compelling Rachmaninov interpreters, the prodigious Alexander Malofeev (b. 2001) has performed for rapt audiences at some of the world's most prestigious competitions, festivals, and concert halls—and it is our great fortune to see him take part in this Rachmaninov Anniversary Marathon in Tsinandali, a tribute to the late Georgian-born pianist Alexander "Lexo" Toradze. Malofeev's all-Rachmaninov program features the portentous and electrifying early C-sharp minor Prelude, one of the composer's most famous works; a selection of virtuosic Etudes-Tableaux; and the 1931 revision of the Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, breathless and lyrical, a fittingly grand statement for the remarkable Malofeev.
