Program notes

Reunion of two long-time friends and colleagues, Steven Isserlis and Mikhail Pletnev.

During this recital given at the Verbier church, they will perform the Sonata for cello and piano composed by Mikhail Pletnev for his friend Steven Isserlis, as well as other masterpieces of the repertoire for cello and piano.

Mikhail Pletnev is not only a world renowned pianist and conductor, he is also a very talented composer. Known as one of the best artists of our time, he won at the age of 21 the Gold Medal and the First Prize at the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in 1978, leading him to take center stage of the music scene.

As far as Steven Isserlis is concerned, he plays with the most prestigious orchestras, such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Berliner Philharmoniker, the New York Philharmonic, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He also gives brilliant and pioneering chamber music recitals. His latest recording of Bach's Cello Suites was awarded in 2007 by Classic FM Gramophone.
