Program notes

Bach, Villa-Lobos, and Puccini are in the spotlight in this Cadogan Hall performance by Simone Menezes and her marvelous Ensemble K, recorded in October 2022. Entitled Metanoia, a Greek term that signifies a profound change of heart, this project and the extraordinary quality of its artists offer us a moment of musical transcendence.

At first glance, the program chosen by Brazilian-born conductor Menezes doesn't suggest any obvious historical or geographical linkages—but her tour takes us from one lofty peak of human achievement to the next, beginning with Bach's first Cello Suite in G Major and concluding with Puccini's Messa di Gloria. The bold choice of works pays off artistically and emotionally, resulting in a performance to take your breath away.
