Program notes

Roberto Alagna, one of the world's most sought-after tenors, performs for the first time on medici.tv, in a concert version of Bizet's Pearl Fishers (Les Pêcheurs de perles)!

The Pearl Fishers (1863) was composed by the young Bizet but was however given at the Parisian Opéra-comique with the same fervor as Carmen, which will be composed decades later! The action is set in the island of Ceylon. Zurga and Nadir are in love with the same woman but they place their friendship over love and swear to renounce to it. Everything will change between them upon the arrival of Leila, a mysterious Hindu priestess, whose invocations aim at protecting the village as the fishing season starts…

The sensational casting of this concert version of the opera is carried by a sunny and vigorous Roberto Alagna as Nadir, Nino Machaidze discovered at the Salzburg Festival, Alexandre Duhamel, acclaimed at the Opéra de Paris and Nicolas Courjal, singing Priest Nourabad's part with his striking bass voice.
