Program notes

Dmitry Masleev and George Li, two rising musical stars, put on a Prokofiev-Scarlatti marathon, performing five of Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Sonatas and two of Domenico Scarlatti's.

This Prokofiev-Scarlatti concert features the triumphant winner of the latest International Tchaikovsky Competition Dmitry Masleev and the Silver medalist in the same competition George Li. Born and raised in a Siberian town between Lake Baikal and the Mongolian border, Dmitry Masleev is making a series of successful debuts as part of his first touring season, developing his profile as a "future great pianist" (La Croix). He is joined by George Li who possesses brilliant virtuosity and effortless grace far beyond his years. The two young talents perform a selection of five Piano Sonatas by Sergei Prokofiev (Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6) and two by Domenico Scarlatti (K. 141 and K. 5).

MPHIL 360°

For this year’s MPHIL 360°, Valery Gergiev and the Münchner Philharmoniker join forces with the world-renowned Mariinsky Orchestra of St. Petersburg to put together a musical celebration of impressive proportions! The three day festival presents all of Sergei Prokofiev’s symphonies and piano sonatas, all five of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s violin concerti as well as selected piano sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti and works by Richard Wagner and Edward Elgar. Stars and star-ensembles of today’s classical music world will also be taking part in the performances, in particular honorees of the International Tchaikovsky competition.
