The incomparable Nicholas Angelich takes the stage at the stunning Grange au Lac in Évian, France, as part of the fourth annual Printemps de la Grange Festival! Amid that dreamy bucolic landscape, the renowned pianist—twice chosen as Soloist of the Year by the Victoires de la Musique Classique—astounds us with his technique and expression. The evening begins with Prokofiev's Visions fugitives, inspired by the words of poet Konstantin Balmont: "In every fleeting vision I see worlds / Filled with the fickle play of rainbows." Ethereal melodies, extraordinary lyricism, and high drama lead inexorably to the searching Lento irrealmente that concludes the cycle.
Angelich continues his program with extracts from another Prokofiev masterpiece, the beloved ballet Romeo and Juliet. Finally, he intrepidly takes on Brahms's virtuosic and wildly inventive Handel Variations, one of the most celebrated sets of variations ever composed, whose final fugue brings the festivities to a triumphant close.
