Program notes

The great Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons and the Wiener Philharmoniker have a close artistic relationship that dates back more than two decades. In this exhilarating matinee program, they light up the Vienna Musikverein’s Golden Hall with three of the most celebrated works from the last 150 years of classical music. Dvořák’s lyrical and cheery Eighth Symphony, inspired by Bohemian folk music, stands in stark contrast with Strauss’s arresting tone poem Tod und Verklärung, Op. 24 (Death and Transfiguration). Stravinsky’s unforgettable Firebird Suite (1919) brings the concert to a breathtaking finish.
