Program notes
French maestro Lionel Bringuier leads the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal in Boëllmann's Suite gothique, Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain, Dutilleux's Métaboles, and Stravinsky's The Firebird Suite.
Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain is a "fantasy for orchestra" that first gained wild public acclaim in Rimsky-Korsakov's published arrangement, performed in its original version on this program. Dutilleux's Métaboles were commissioned by maestro George Szell in 1959 for the Cleveland Orchestra's 40th anniversary, and its five overlapping movements draw their inspiration from a rhetorical term of the work's title that means (as Dutilleux himself put it), "to present one or several ideas in a different order and from different angles, until, by successive stages, they are made to change character completely." The evening closes with Stravinsky's 1919 Firebird suite, which brings to musical life the timeless Russian fable of love, magic, and rebirth.
