The incredible Lahav Shani lights up the stage at the 2021 Verbier Festival, live from the Salle des Combins with baritone extraordinaire Matthias Goerne and the prestigious Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra!
The lyrical evening kicks off with the genial Goerne's refined and moving interpretations of selected Lieder by Schubert (orchestrated by Schmalcz, Reger, and Webern), one of the composers to whose work his voice is exquisitely suited. Maestro Shani and the ensemble continue the celebration with a monument of the classical repertoire: Mozart's 41st and final symphony, the Jupiter! This masterpiece in four movements is virtuosic (in its contrapuntal writing and melodic richness), triumphant (in its C-major tonality and frenzied final movement), and full of beautiful surprises, like the unexpected third theme in the first movement (instead of the standard two) and its brilliant mixing of genres (listen for the operatic influence in the second and third movements!). The nickname Jupiter seems fully apropos of such a titanic achievement, but it was a posthumous attribution, appearing regularly on programs only decades after Mozart's death.
