Program notes

The fourth concert in this year's Verbier Festival series Unprecedented Encounters: an evening of Russian music featuring some of the international music scene's greatest soloists.

Shostakovich's Piano Quintet in G Minor, Op. 57 opens the concert. It was commissioned in 1940 by his frequent collaborators, the Beethoven Quartet, a young string quartet that wanted a quintet it could perform with Shostakovich himself as pianist. Taneyev's Piano Quartet in E Major, Op. 20—premiered in Moscow by the Bohemian Quartet with the composer himself at the piano—closes the concert.
