Program notes

The Salzburg Festival celebrates the 150th anniversary of Richard Strauss's birth with this concert conducted by Maestro Gustavo Dudamel and broadcast live on medici.tv!

This concert will be available in Germany and France from May 24, 2015.

Gustavo Dudamel, El Sistema's prodigy, has become an international celebrity. He is the current music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and a leading character on the classical music scene. This summer, he returns to Salzburg where he conducts a homage concert to Richard Strauss, including two of the composer's masterpieces: Death and Transfiguration, an early work by Strauss who wrote it when he was barely 25 years old; and Thus Spoke Zarathustra, probably the composer's best-known score, that was made popular by the 1968 movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The first part of the concert presents Time Recycling, a new symphonic piece by contemporary composer René Staar.
