Maestro Gianandrea Noseda and stage director David Sakvarelidze bring a magnificent semi-staged concert version of Verdi's Un ballo in maschera to the 2022 Verbier Festival! The festivities come to life with the talents of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, the Oberwalliser Vokalensemble choir and a host of impeccable vocalists including Freddie De Tommaso, Angela Meade, Ludovic Tézier, and Ying Fang!

Un ballo in maschera, based on an opera by Auber and inspired by the events surrounding the assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden, is a rich and sumptuous work that depicts human passion and emotion with elegance and a touch of humor. Censored by the Bourbons in Naples and then by the pope in Rome, the final version of the libretto is the tale of a colonial governor in 17th-century Boston who falls in love with the wife of a friend. In this opus, a barbed blend of tragedy and comedy, love and politics, Verdi expands his stylistic and emotive palette with a greater variety of orchestral colors, a masterful use of winds, and fuller detail in the psychological expression of his characters.
