Program notes

Maestro Gianandrea Noseda conducts the Verbier Festival Orchestra with Ukrainian pianist Anna Fedorova and the Oberwalliser Vokalensemble, live from the Salle des Combins for the opening of the Verbier Festival 2022! Introduced by Marc Bouchkov and Tsotne Zedginidze.

This symphonic concert is the first part of a tribute to composer Rodion Schedrin, who celebrates his 90th birthday this year. The original program was reworked as a call for peace, solidarity, and inclusion of musicians of all nationalities. Schedrin’s resolutely modern Piano Concerto No. 2, performed by young pianist Anna Fedorova, begins the festivities. After the interval, the Oberwalliser Vokalensemble performs Valentin Silvestrov’s moving Prayer for Ukraine for mixed a cappella choir, a poignant work inspired by the pro-European protests in Ukraine in 2013 and 2014. Shostakovich’s colossal Symphony No. 4 ends the program—a cornerstone of the composer’s orchestral works—and one of the most personal, powerful, and enigmatic symphonies of the 20th century.
