This gala concert opens with the William Tell Overture from Rossini’s final operatic chef-d’œuvre. A masterpiece on its own, the Overture is a symphonic poem in and of itself. The premiere of Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony, which closes the concert, was an incredible event: separated by eight years from his Ninth, this dark and brooding work was composed soon after the death of the infamous Stalin.
