Program notes

The acclaimed Austrian maestro Franz Welser-Möst leads the Wiener Philharmoniker in a matinee concert in the magnificent Golden Hall of Vienna’s Musikverein! After opening with Schubert’s haunting overture to Die Zauberharfe, D. 644, they perform Austrian composer and Wiener Philharmoniker violinist René Staar’s Time Recycling, a work that claims an unusual distinction: it was the very first commission given to a member of the Philharmoniker in the orchestra’s 170-year history! The program continues after intermission with Richard Strauss’s luminous symphonic poem Ein Heldenleben, Op. 40 (A Hero’s Life).
