Follow celebrated conductor François-Xavier Roth and the incredible Berliner Philharmoniker to the Baden-Baden Easter Festival for a fascinating concert juxtaposing Bach and Stravinsky, spanning multiple centuries, with virtuoso oboist Albrecht Mayer!
The program begins with a magnificent but lesser-known work by Stravinsky, the orchestral suite from the ballet The Fairy’s Kiss, inspired by “Tchaikovsky’s muse”: an evocative, powerful score that transfigures works by the young Tchaikovsky in surprising and delightful ways. Next up is Bach’s timeless BWV 1055—widely known as a harpsichord concerto—in a version for oboe d’amore and orchestra, with the impeccable Mayer stepping into the solo role. After intermission, the concert closes out with Stravinsky’s extraordinary Petrushka, a ballet brimming with modernity, in which the composer irrepressibly asserts his singular personality with a concise and elliptical musical language, familiar and easy melodies, and bold syncopated rhythms.
