Program notes

The incomparable Esa-Pekka Salonen pays tribute to one of his most illustrious compatriots in this stunning live concert from the Philharmonie de Paris! Under the maestro's impeccable direction, the Orchestre de Paris performs three works by the great Jean Sibelius, veritable symbol of Finnish culture and identity. First up is the haunting "Death of Mélisande," taken from orchestral suite Pelléas et Mélisande, a work to which Salonen has often returned, always with great emotional depth. Next, enjoy the light and cheerful motifs of his Symphony No. 6, leading into the mysterious and dramatic (despite the C Major key) themes of the composer's final, genre-defying Symphony No. 7, a single-movement masterpiece of form...
