Program notes
Wagner saw in Beethoven's Ninth and last symphony the "redemption of music" and proclaimed it "the human gospel of art to come." It harbored all the elements that serve to embody Wagner's total art: the instruments reached out to the magic of the "poetic verb" (Schiller's Ode to Joy) and the art of sounds united with that of words.
There are indeed different ways of listening to Beethoven as something that can be grandiose or grandiloquent. However all of Beethoven's symphonies seem to have created visonary images and heroic impressions in those that heard them.
The complete Beethoven symphonies on period instruments, performed by the Chambre Philharmonique and conducted by Emmanuel Krivine was available live and is now available on delayed streaming on medici.tv and on citedelamusique.tv.
